Those fancy dog food companies cook them at super high temperatures in an attempt to kill all the microbes and pathogens.  What’s left is food with no nutritional value.  The nice dog food companies then add vitamins to make it all better.  Unfortunately they add preservatives, sweeteners and food colorings and a host of all sorts of wonderful chemicals no one has ever heard of.

Dangers of a Commercial Based Diet

Many pet owners find it hard to believe commercial based dog food is bad, and that by simply using quality ingredients and following healthy dog food recipes they can make such a difference in their dog’s health and well being.  The benefits of homemade dog food recipes are immeasurable when compared to a commercial based diet; the pet food companies have deceived us about what’s in their product.

The pet food industry polices its self.  There is little to no regulatory standards in place to oversee what these companies do.  The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) is a non-profit organization which sets standards for the quality and safety of animal feed and pet food in the United States. The issue with AAFCO is that it is a voluntary organization and has no real influence.  Pet food manufacturers do not have to conform or comply with any of AAFCO’s standards.  When you see a product labeled "formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO", that does not mean it was approved by AAFCO.

AAFCO is not serving the interest of pets or pet owners; they are strictly in place to represent the agricultural industry and their interest.  It comes down to big business, dollars and sense.  AAFCO is controlled by the large pet food conglomerates.

The pet food industry is dominated by just a few mega conglomerates that manufacture and distribute most of the big and well known brands on the market.  Most of the commercial dog food manufactured today is done so by just a few companies, they distribute under subsidiaries and private label branding.

An explosion in demand for commercial based pet foods has created a lot of competition for the limited animal proteins used in manufacturing, and there is only a limited amount of supply.  Combine that with putting profitability first and foremost and you get a very low quality product with minimal to no standards to produce.

Don’t let the marketing and advertising fool you.  Commercial based dog food is the worst thing you could feed your dog.  It’s nothing more than the worst possible ingredients presented to you as the most nutritional food under the sun.  If pet food companies spent a fraction of their marketing and advertising budgets on healthy ingredients, our pets would be a lot healthier.
